With the economy in a rut and the job market competition fierce and/or with slim pickings, many have opted to go back to school to acquire the skills required for these select job openings. However, is returning to school really a good move?

For many individuals with an undergraduate degree, but no job, a low paying job or internship, it may seem to be a good move in order to stave off student loan repayments and prepare for that ideal job, but in reality graduate school costs more than undergraduate education. Not to mention the fact that when all is said and done there is little guarantee that the job market would have improved and that there are job opportunities available which would be capable of covering those monthly student loan bills in conjunction with rent and standard cost of living expenditures.

Worst yet, if you happen to have an actual income, albeit low, but no dependents, your tax burden will hit you like a ton of bricks. For these individuals there are few options and places to receive help in covering all of these necessary cost and/or accrued debt.

Charging off student loan debt in a bankruptcy proceeding will soon be a necessity and no longer just a possiblity being debated in congress.

Being a Small Business

The Community Book Store has officially been in existence since the Fall of 2003 and 6 years later, while we have experienced little growth, we have experienced many accomplishments:

1) We have successfully organized and conducted four poetry contest throughout the New York metropolitan area.

2) We have successfully published four resultant poetry books.

3) We have aided in nurturing creativity in the city’s youth.

4) We have built lasting networks with the city’s schools and other individuals inspired by our mission.

Despite our successes, we do recognize the need to build on the follow aspects which can make or break a small business:

1) Cash flow- make sure there’s enough money in the bank before starting any venture

2) Start and stay small until all the bugs are worked out, then consider expanding

3) Increase sales

4) Keep the mission objective in focus at all times

5) Don’t try and cheat Uncle Sam, it may catch up to you

Our Annual Poetry Contest

Beginning in 2003, The Community Book Store has held a city wide poetry contest, open to children in grades 3 through 8 (although recently the cut-off grade has been set at 6th grade).

Children in public school, private school, specialized schools or home schooled are welcome to enter this free contest.

Winners and participants in our contest receive prizes such as a medal recording their achievement, gift cards, honorable mention in our poetry anthology series and/or their work is published in our poetry anthology series.

Welcome to the Community Book Store’s First Blog!

In addition to being a book store, we here at the Community Book Store are committed to the support of creativity, especially in the youth of today.

To jump-start some inspiration and give those curious about us a taste of what we do please read the following excerpt from or 2009 anthology of poems:

THE LEADER:

If only they knew how it is for me

I’m turning 13, the world I begin to see.

My friends began to change right before my eyes,

And now they start telling all sorts of lies….
